Zirconia (ZrO2), also known as zirconium oxide (distinct from zircon), is a white crystalline zirconium oxide. In its most common natural state, it exists as the mineral baddeleyite, which has a monoclinic crystal structure. Cubic zirconia, a version of zirconia stabilized with dopants, is artificially created in a range of colors and utilized both as a gemstone and a substitute for diamonds.

Zirconia’s main application lies in creating durable ceramics, notably in dental practices.
It is also utilized for coating titanium dioxide pigment particles to protect them, and as a material for refractories, abrasives, and enamels.
Due to its capacity to let oxygen ions pass easily through its crystal lattice at elevated temperatures, stable zirconia finds use in oxygen sensors and the membranes of fuel cells.
This property of high ionic conductivity, coupled with low electronic conductivity, positions it as a highly valuable electrically conductive ceramic.
Additionally, zirconia serves as a solid electrolyte in devices that exhibit electrochromism.
