Erbium sputtering targets are made of high purity erbium metal. It has a melting point of 1522.0°C, a boiling point of 2510.0°C, and a density of 8.795 g/cm3. It is a soft, malleable, lustrous, silver-colored metal. It is very stable in air, reacts very slowly with oxygen and water, and is soluble in acids. Its salt oxide is rose-colored and has a clear absorption spectrum in the visible, ultraviolet, and infrared.
