Zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), sometimes called zirconium oxide (not to be confused with zircon), is a white crystalline form of zirconium oxide. Its most naturally occurring form with a monoclinic crystal structure is the mineral plagioclase zircon. Dopant-stabilized cubic-structured zirconia, cubic zirconia, is synthesized in a variety of colors and used as gemstones and diamond simulants.
Purity: 99.9%
CAS: 1314-23-4
The main use of zirconia is to produce hard ceramics, such as dentistry. Other uses include as protective coatings for titanium dioxide pigment particles, as refractory materials, insulation materials, abrasives, and enamel. Stable zirconia is used for oxygen sensors and fuel cell membranes because it allows oxygen ions to freely move through the crystal structure at high temperatures. This high ionic conductivity (and low electronic conductivity) makes it one of the most useful electroceramics. Zirconia is also used as a solid electrolyte in electrochromic devices.
Zirconia is a precursor of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) in electrical ceramics, which is a high K dielectric present in countless components.
